This week in 60B

This week in 60B we have had a visitor: Sarah Ormes. She has talked to us about different books that we may want to read.

In Mrs Bartlett's maths group we have been learning about symmetry and other types of it. I Mr Hemplman's group we have been doing rotational symmetry on a grid with coordinate's.

Just a quick reminder for year 6 that SAT'S revision club is on this week so please come on the day you have signed up for. Thank you.

On Wednesday year 6 are having a career fair. Some parents are coming in and talking to us about their jobs.

This week in 60B

This week we found out our new topic is 'The World is our Oyster.' It means that we are thinking about our future. It's very interesting to see what other people think about their future.

In maths last week we all did tests. We did very well but have things to work on, like Venn Diagrams and Time.

In English we have been describing characters and writing a story. We have also been looking at punctuation, using full stops, commas, speech marks, exclamation marks and ellipses. Ellipses are used to help build up suspense in a story.  As he walked down the dark alleyway, he could hear a strange noise ....

SAT'S  revision club has started this week so please check what day you are signed up for.

In ICT we have been learning how to use the computer programme Scratch. This is a programme that lets you code animations and games. We have learnt how to make a character dance and play music.

Last Friday we made a picollage on the ipads, all about Buddhism. We have been learning all about Buddhism with Mrs O'Gara every Friday.   Bodhgaya is place of pilgrimage for Buddhists around the world.

Bee Campaigns

This week we have been creating bee campaigns. (I'm sure you know as we showed all of the upper school today). Our campaign (Edie and Rosie's) was called 'Save Hives, Save Lives'. We visited 3H and we think they enjoyed all of the presentations. They were very supportive and the campaigns were successful.

Also in Mr Hempleman's maths class we have started doing co-ordinates, it is fun but hard. However, in Mr Hancock's maths group we have been doing level 6 and level 7 multiplying and dividing fractions which is VERY HARD.

In English we have made posters to encourage you to help the bees survive. Also we have made paper plates to show what food we would have for tea if bees did not pollinate the plants, ie no pizza, chocolate or vegetables! They are on display by Mr H's classroom. Here is a picture of them:

Maths and Bees!

This week in Mr Hempleman's maths group we have been doing long division (the hangman method.)  Also in Mr Hancock's maths group they are working on fractions. It was really fun but we had to work really hard to achieve our goals.

In topic today we have learnt about what will happen if bees die.  If bees die we will only live 4 years longer. We have been making posters to encourage people to save and protect these amazing mini-beasts (who are crucial to the survival of mankind.)

This morning we have been writing our termly writes. We had to write an information page about bees and their life style.

Last Thursday was world book day. We saw some wonderful costumes: Rosie came as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games and Edie dressed up as Geek Girl. Oliver T was Daddy Pig and looked very convincing!

Also, please don't forget that this Thursday is the SAT's Information Meeting at 6:30pm in the Lower School Hall.  Thank you.

Learning about Bees

This term our topic has been Bees. We have been learning a lot about these fascinating flying insects:
  • Bees pollinate over 1/4 of our worlds plants and food
  • Bees are slowly dying and without bees we would have barely any food
  • Without bees there would be no chocolate or dairy products!
  • It would cost farmers over £1.8 billion a year to pollinate our crops!
Also we made bees out of card and wrote our facts on the back. We have learnt a lot about the life cycle of a bee! It was so interesting!

Today wrote and drew on paper plates what we would have to eat if there were no bees to pollinate the plants.  We would have barely anything - no sugary things, no dairy, no fruit or vegetables (except maybe bananas, kiwi and mangoes!)

Later on this term we will be writing information pages all about Bees and hopefully learning even more about these remarkable insects.

OUR AMAZING TRIP TO TECHNIQUEST

On Wednesday 14th of January, we were lucky enough to visit the fantastic Techniquest in Cardiff, Wales. It was not the normal Wednesday Year 6 would generally have, but a fabulous, exciting day in the amazing science activity filled Techniquest. Here is more about the great trip.

The coach journey was long and tedious, though also worth the excitement to come. On the way we were delayed - by snow! It lay in thick blankets of white on everything; the fields were a frosty beauty of white powder; the houses were like pretty gingerbread houses; the trees were icy fingers of winter. We travelled past this winter wonderland and on to the Severn bridge. It was very high and the river below looked dark and churning. We crossed safely and yelled " we're in Wales!" as we arrived on solid ground. Everyone was now really impaitent to get there. Then finally we arrived!!!

We all leaped out of the coach, buzzing with excitment. We were told to put our bags in an enormous box and were guided into Techniquest itself!

The activities were fabulous. here are some we liked:

  • The walk on piano - a giant piano.
  • The granite ball - a gigantic granite ball that you could spin.
  • The zoom in - a big tablet that you could zoom into space.
We then went and had our lunch. Mine was very ,very yummy!

Later on, we went to a fantastic show. It was called 'The Materials Show'.  Two scientists did experiments with liquids, solids and gases. My favourite experiment was when they put a banana in liquid nitrogen (a freezing cold substance), it froze and then they used it as a hammer. Wow!

We had a bit more time exploring the activities and then hopped onto the coach to go home. We were all sad - we didn't want such a brilliant day to end.

All in all, Techniquest was an amazing place to be and it was a fantastic experience.  We hope we can go again ...

Christmas Time!

This term has been outstanding! We have held a WW2 cafe that ended our amazing topic, where we made our own cakes. There were carrot cookies, gingerbread cake, vineger cake, dripping cake, mini apple and cinnamon pies and rock buns. We set up the cafe in a WW2 style and had people dressed up as waiters and waitesses and some as customers, along with our parents and teachers.

We have also been making some authentic WW2 Christmas presents. We decorated wooden blocks and had to sand the blocks and then put a primer on it. When the primer was dry we painted them and then varnished them.  They were lovely and colourful. Instead of doing blocks other people did sewing, people did the blanket stitch. Some people made pillows, christmas tree decorations and bunting.

On the 17th and 18th of December children got to participate in te Newbridge Christmas Concert. Year 6 played a piece of music called Pachelbel's Canon and it was brilliant! Blues band, orchestra, recoders, brass group and of coures the choir all took part in the wonderful event. Blues band played Billie Jean and Alfie L did a solo, it was magnificent!

Year 6 are really looking forward to watching Cinderella at the pantomime at the Theatre Royal this afternoon. We will be telling all about it next year.
